Another year, another round of the Oscars.
This year, the Oscars will be airing on Sunday, April 25, 2021. The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), will honor the best films that were released between January 1, 2020, and February 28, 2021.
Recent controversies surrounding the annual awards show have led some commentators to predict that interest among the public would decrease and that ratings would be done. Despite that, 72% of those we polled said that they would be watching the Oscars this year, while 46% said their interest in the Oscars increased (compared to a few years ago). This compares to a quarter (26%) who said their interest stayed the same and 28% who said their interest decreased.
The table below shows twenty years’ worth of Oscar TV viewership data.
Increased interest in watching the Oscars this year was greater among (self-described) Liberals (52%) when compared to (self-described) Conservatives (39%).
Interest in watching the Oscars increased more among males than females (62% vs. 27%), as well as those between the ages of 25 and 34 (when compared to other age groups).
Regardless of your stance on recent Oscar controversies and your interest in the show, our poll results certainly suggest that this year’s awards ceremony will be enjoyed by millions of people around the country.
Far from losing its luster, we think the Oscars still have a large, loyal, and strong following.
