When it comes to love, does age really matter? Or put another way, does the existence of an age gap make a difference in romantic relationships?

According to a poll we conducted on March 1, 2021, a sizable number of Americans think that age does, indeed matter.

All told, 60% if those surveyed said that age makes a difference in romantic relationships, while 40% said it doesn’t matter at all.

Men were more likely than women to say that age matters (males: 54% vs. females: 46%)…

…while those between the ages of 25 to 34 (37%) and 34 to 44 (32%) were most likely to think that age is a factor in romantic relationships.

On the other hand, those who were less than 25 years of age and older 45 and above were least likely to think that age matters.

Perhaps the idealism of youth, and the wisdom of years, are able to shrug off societal pressures that work to put the brakes on what might otherwise be beautiful, fulfilling relationships.

Among those who said age makes a difference, the average acceptable age gap was 10 years.
